Hoover vs FDR

The Great Depression caused hardship for almost everyone in America. Franklin Roosevelt and Herbert Hoover were two presidents during this era with two very different approaches on how to deal with It. Roosevelt Is generally thought of as a liberal, while Hoover Is considered a conservative. A liberal Is generally someone who pushes for direct government involvement In citizens' lives, while a conservative typically pushes for limited government.Roosevelt did indeed have a more liberal approach, putting mammoth sums of money into relief programs directly for the people; Hoover was conservative in his approach?he claimed it was the Job of churches and private charities to provide relief, however became less conservative towards the end of his term. Hoover was especially conservative for the beginning of his term. He showed limited government involvement through very limited spending. In 1929, the first year of Hover's term, the government expenditures were only $3. 27 billion, barely rising 1933, however, spending Increased to $4. 659 billion and $4,598 billion, respectively Doc F), showing that his conservatism decreased a bit. The deficit still remained extremely low, showing Hover's unwillingness to be too Involved In recovering the economy, but rather allowing the private factor to grow. Hoover also worked on limiting government by literally limiting government?by not increasing control or spreading bureaucracy. He said that Liberalism, â€Å"should not be found striving to spread bureaucracy but striving to set bounds to it† (Doc A).He showed his conservative values by criticizing a large government. He also left the charity work to private charities and churches, saying that â€Å"economic depression cannot be curbed by legislative action or executive pronouncement (Doc 8). Later in his term Hoover became slightly more liberal in his approaches to ending the Great Depression. The federal expenditure Increased from $3. 127 billion In 1929 to $4. 659 billion In 1932 (Doc F). He started helping the people more directly by creating huge government sponsored projects which created Jobs. These Include the Hoover Dam.Hoover also hectically increased the size of government, passing more legislation and creating more bureaucracy. Under him later in his term, farmers were lent money to buy and sell agricultural goods and were helped through cooperatives. Such spending and loaning is very liberal. Hoover wanted to â€Å"rehabilitate agriculture† through â€Å"large appropriations for loans† (Doc D). Document C depicts Hoover as no longer caring about being seen as conservative, rather saving the poor by spending government money. Roosevelt, unlike Hoover, was a liberal president from the beginning to the ND of his term.He stated himself that â€Å"Liberalism becomes the protection for the far-sighted conservative† (Doc G). This not only promotes liberalism, but attacks conservatism. Franklin Roosevelt liberalism Is most clearly seen through the federal spending under him. During his term, annual government expenditures rose from government spending more to end the depression. Roosevelt also, as Hoover did legislation and increasing bureaucracy. The legislation included the Works Progress Administration. The WAP cost $1 1. 4 billion and employed a huge portion of the workforce. He also passed the Agricultural Adjustment Act to stabilize the farm industry by decreasing the surplus created by farms. FDA can be characterized as liberal due to his extensive spending, loans, and government intervention. While FDA is most commonly known as a liberal and Herbert Hoover is most commonly known as a conservative, Hoover became more liberal in his approach to ending the Great Depression toward the end of his term. Although Hoover played a part in ending the Great Depression, it really took Fad's extreme liberalism to completely recover America's economy.

Ib Economics Commentary 1 †Microeconomics Essay

Rebecca Bundhun, (October 19, 2012) Cost of summer getaways hit as air ticket prices rise, The National, http://www.thenational.ae/thenationalconversation/industry-insights/tourism/cost-of-summer-getaways-hit-as-air-ticket-prices-rise The cost of an airline ticket can fluctuate tremendously based on a number of factors. The goal of airlines is to maximize their capacity by having the greatest number of passengers on all trips. This may however be difficult, as airlines pricing is not only dictated by their own operating costs and profit margins required but they have to consider complementary items that could have an effect on supply and demand for their product. By definition, demand theory explains the inverse relationship between quantity and price. This law explains that if the quantity available of a product or service wanted by the public is low, the price for that product or service will be high. As demand for a product or service increases, the price will increase. This law is critical as we are able to predict prices based on the demand of a product. In the case of airlines, they are able to predict that prices for their services will go up during the high travel months. People are willing to pay more for travel during the summer months, as they know that supply is limited and their available time is defined by their vacation schedules. If we were to graph this scenario, we would find that price and quantity relationship creates a maximum efficiency point called equilibrium point. The equilibrium point tells us the best combination of price and quantity. With the graph below, we can illustrate that some travelers will be forced to cancel their travel plans due to high ticket costs, just as we can identify travelers that will have to fly no matter what the cost of the fare is. However what economists tend to focus on is trying to find an equilibrium point between price and quantity. As we know, airlines provide a service to clients by connecting passengers to desired destinations worldwide. Although prices tend to be set by supply and demand, they are also exposed to externalities. An externality occurs when the actions of consumers or producers give rise to positive or negative side effects on other people, who are not part of these actions and whose interests are not taken into consideration. A perfect example of a negative externality is the rise of jet fuel. As a barrel of oil rises, the price of jet fuel also rises and consequently the price of an airline ticket also rises. Externalities can create a positive or negative demand or effect on a product or service. Price elasticity of demand is a term that helps us understand the measure of the responsiveness of the quantity demanded to changes in price. In general, if there is a large responsiveness of the quantity demanded, the demand is referred to as being elastic, if there is a small responsiveness, demand is inelastic. Airlines take advantage of the existence of inelasticity. Mr. D’Souza states in the article, â€Å"People are still flying. People traditionally plan these breaks, and regardless of the price, they fly. The demand is very, very high.† On the contrary, airlines understand price elasticity and use this well. They know that fare prices can be considered both elastic and inelastic based on the circumstance the traveler finds themselves in. Airlines study their client base, their competitors, and use patterns to predict the behavior of clients based on the condition. They know the probabilities of travelers changing to an alternative airline if their price rises, if they modify their routes, but most of all, they use price elasticity to predict the success of promotions offered by themselves or any other competitor. Airlines want to lure business by creating special values and convince unplanned tourists to take the trip. Say an average ticket price from Dallas to Las Vegas is $550.00; airlines will create a promotional price and may offer the same route for $199.00. Since the price is so low, people will often forget that they are taking an unplanned trip and will justify the trip by thinking about the cost savings realized and not of the unplanned expense. The demand curve below shows how changes in price lead to changes in the quantity demanded. Although airline tickets are considered elastic and inelastic, most economists consider it elastic unless travel is done for business use. Domestic airline travel can be substituted by bus transportation, automobile, train etc. Airline travel is elastic especially as the person’s income increases so their opportunity for travel increases and they will be more likely to afford the variation in cost.

Public shipping - marine pollution and aspects of marine environment Essay

Public shipping - marine pollution and aspects of marine environment cases - Essay Example It is observed that disputes that arise in territorial waters have seen the port states exercise their special rights on territorial waters and claim to do so for the safety and security in their national interests. Marine environment and pollution is a concern for those holding rights over the territorial waters as well as on high seas, particularly in territorial waters due to its utilization for various activities like fishing, sea-bed activities, etc. The subject of Marine environment and pollution encompasses marine environmental activities and related principles, jurisdiction of port states over ships moving in the territorial region, and other sea-bed activities by the port state. In the particular cases of Corfu Channel and Anglo-Norwegian Fisheries conflict, marine pollution and environmental issues have been raised in the political, economic and historical contexts. It also seen that the port states have a rather diligent advantage over the claimant states in both the cases wherein in Corfu Channel case, the court put the responsibility of proof on the British government which is the claimant (Kazazi, 1995, p 86), while in the case of Anglo-Norwegian Fisheries case, the courts ruled that Norwegian government has the right to exercise its sovereignty on its territorial waters keeping in view the geo-socio custom of the Norwegians in depending on sea waters for fishing as an occupation by a majority (Wise, 1984, p 70). The Corfu Channel case- In 1946, two United Kingdom's ships have been damaged with loss of life of over 40 naval staff in the ships in the territorial waters of Albania. It is alleged by the United Kingdom that Albania has violated International law and had planted or was aware of the presence of mines in its territorial waters which caused loss of life and damage to two of its ships Soumarage and Volage when they struck mines lying under the sea. Earlier in 1944 and 1945 when the British seamen along with a team of international bodies swept the territorial waters of Albania, they had acted according to the law and had promptly informed and taken safety measures to keep the ships away during the minesweeping operations. However, on 15th May 1946 and again on 22nd October 1946, the British ships were shot at by the Norwegian authorities as a defensive attack alleging that the British ships were violating their orders and regulations in the international law to inform the port of their entry. In the second attack, in October, two of the ships that were sent by the British government after informing the Norwegian government of mine sweeping operations with the permission of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), were attacked and they stuck mines that lay under the sea resulting in loss of life and damage to the ships. The British government claimed that the Albanian government deliberately laid mines in the sea to disrupt the innocent passage rights of other nations. Also, since it had sent the two ships for mine sweeping operations, it alleged that Albania had violated the regulations in International law. It cites the articles 3 and 4 of the 8th convention of Hague of 1997 noting that Albania had violated the International law and failed to inform the other nations of the impending dangers due to the mines present in the territoria

Anthropology - Essay Example The cuts that congress has put on the food stamp program are oppressive to those individuals who rely on this program to ensure that they make their ends meet (Wallbank). Because of the cuts that have been instituted, it will make it much harder for individuals to ensure that they keep their families well fed, and it is a fact that many of the people who rely on this program might end up going hungry. It can be said that if one were to consider this according to the Marxist principle, one will find that Congress, many of whose members are well off members of the society, is making an attempt to maintain the current status quo through denying the poor a means through which they can be able to improve their lives. The current social and economic institutions as they exist in American society have suited the needs of the elite within this society and this is the reason why many of the latter would like it to remain as it is. The cuts of finding can be considered to be a relationship between the elite and the masses who are involved in the economic process and the best example that can be stated of this concept is related to the concept of a correlation between a master and a slave. It is a familiar Marxist belief that the economic structure of a society has an effect on its political structure, and as such, the elite, being the one who run the economy, have the power to ensure that they influence every aspect of the lives of the people within the society. The fact that Marxists are all in accord that social class has a direct effect on the economy is fundamental because it shows how societies develop within their own contexts (Ouyang 643). In the long run, it is the elite which benefits because they are the ones who will get the services derived from the money that is saved. The large corporations have come to dominate the globe in a variety of ways that cover the entire social life of societies. It is a fact that the corporations which have a global influence

Summarise and critically evaluate the differences between instrumental Essay

Summarise and critically evaluate the differences between instrumental and normative compliance with the law. Use relevant empir - Essay Example In most countries, it is necessary to use instrumental compliance in order to maintain law and order in the country. If a country does not have the procedures of punishing evil deeds, crimes will be committed randomly and can lead to a failure of a government. In schools, instrumental compliance is practiced every day where the institution offers a reward to a student who performs well. These rewards help in challenging the other students to work even harder. On the other hand, the institution can also punish those students who fail to do a chore or duty. This again will help the other students to shun disobedience. Punishments and rewards are commonly used in public and private institution in order to enhance compliance. In places of works, people who perform well in desired activities end up being promoted to the next level in their career, their status change or they can get a pay rise. In contrast, normative compliance is when people do what they do because they think it is socia lly right. These sets of rules flow from social rules that are internalized. These are the internal feelings and thoughts that make people not to shoplift the items of their neighbors’ shop. Committing such an action is morally wrong and this feeling is what gives most people a sense of law abidance (Smith & Cornish, 2004, p.9). A community penalty occurs when a court or a justice system considers the crime committed punishable by the community. These penalties always require that an individual gets punished through performing some hard chores so that he cannot repeat the mistake again. The bodies that conduct these punishment, in the community level include, the action plan order which helps to enhance the social skills of the offender. It raises awareness on the influences of peer relationships and consequences of offences. Secondly, the offender might be required to attend the community rehabilitation classes where the offenders are taught to obey. Several classes in the c ommunity levels can help the offenders not to commit the crimes again. In a society, rules and regulations that ensure that individuals behave well must exist for people to behave well and avoid punishments of certain crimes. In most cases, the crimes are committed as a result of influences from social group. Different communities punish people different depending on the strictness of the community. In a community, social influence is the process of putting change to the people in the community. The norms of communities might be different but the individuals who belong to that community must be straight enough to respect them. For example, the people might receive direct orders, compliance, conformity, or obedience to the norms. Conformity can work well to reduce the cases of crimes in the society (Knight, 2003, p.55). Why people obey the law Most people obey the law because they think that it is the right thing to do or because they fear being punished. It is advisable for people t o obey the law since it is the right thing to do. This reason makes people not to feel as if the law is a burden to them. Every person should obey the law because it is their duty to do so. In the world today, countries obey the law only when certain offences have been committed or when there is a presence of threat due to breakage of the law. In the absence of these threats, people disobey the rules of the country without any fear. In addition to this, government’s officials in most countries change the law to fit a situation or ignore a situation

The Role of the Mentor In Organising, Managing And Leading Programmes Essay

The Role of the Mentor In Organising, Managing And Leading Programmes of Learning In Clinical Education - Essay Example In fact, one of the most familiar adages puts it, â€Å"Experience teaches us best.† This can be further elaborated from Kolb’s theory of experiential learning. Illustration 1: Kolb’s cycle of experiential learning (Quinn, 2000). In this theory, Kolb’s emphasised four generic adaptive abilities to reach effective learning and these involve concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation (Quinn, 2000). Furthermore, in clinical education, another important point in facilitating learning is about providing strategies for effective clinical teaching (Gaberson and Oermann, 2010). However, facilitation alone does not prove to be sufficient to ensure learning at the highest level. Supervision in learning in clinical practice is a must. Aside from facilitating the students in their learning in clinical education, mentors have the role to supervise them. This supervision is evident on the supervision cycle model o f Goldhammer and his colleagues in 1980. Regarding this supervision, it is an integral part of educator’s role (a) to initiate pre-observation stage which establishes rapport, reviews plans and discusses and rehearses changes; (b) the next stage is about educator’s actual observation of the session and taking into account noting issues for future discussion; (c) the third stage is about the analysis of the data that educator’s gathered from observation and consequently followed by strategy planning for feedbacks; (d) finally, both educator and student should initiate individual analyses and undergo plans for modification (Rose and Best, 2005). Supervision therefore is a hands-on activity that tries not only to facilitate learning, but more so... This essay stresses that managing the assessment process so that there is time for continuous feedback and identifying if the student is progressing is another important concern in student’s learning process. It is true that meting the challenges and difficulties presented to the mentors while supporting students in practice is another important area of concern. This is the bottom line of support system. This paper makes a conclusion that managing the situation if there are other concerns involved is another important move in student’s learning success. For example, enhancing the learning of students in the hospital area requires placement area analysis. This means mentors are not only there to facilitate, supervise, assess and give their support, but they should substantially consider the remarkable strengths and weaknesses of their students in their specific placement area. Mentors therefore are expected to conduct analysis and even specific forms of research. Students prior to becoming certified professionals in the clinical practice should undergo necessary learning, but they should not acquire this by themselves. They need mentors to teach, train and above all to support them prior to achieving their individual future objectives in life. Mentors therefore are expected to put their best foot forward as leaders which have substantial ability to facilitate, supervise, assess and support learning at the highest level as possible.

Was the britsh navy pro nationalist during the spanish civil war Essay

Was the britsh navy pro nationalist during the spanish civil war - Essay Example Consequently the safest option for the British Government was to play an non-intervention role throughout the whole war but with secret support for the Franco Regime. Jill Edwards comments on this communist phobia of the British ruling class, ‘in the first weeks of the rebellion, it was the thread of anti-communism which formed the warp of British government attitudes.’ 1 The dilemma of the British Government was that on one side she had to address the fear of the rise of the socialist among the Republicans while there was another posing danger from the Nazi who were striving to establish control over the Franco Regime. Like other democratic countries of Europe officially turn a blind eye to the war just because of the fear that any bias and direct support might eventually lead to another Bloody world war. But Franco Regime received an indirect and unofficial favour from the British Naval Force just because the British Government strove to check the unanimous control over the Franco Regime. 2 But meanwhile the emotional rise of the Socialists among the Republican due to the aloofness of the European democratic countries and the direct artillery support of the Stalin Government pushed the British rulers to take a strong stand for the Nationalists. In an article ‘International Naval Cooperation During the Spanish Civil war† Adam B Siegel co mments on the overall picture of the war situation as following: Among ideologues on the left and the right, the Spanish civil war was perhaps the most controversial conflict†¦. Moreover, European powers could not ignore the fact that it posed the greatest threat to peace†¦. Spain’s strategic location, the rise of fascism†¦.drew international naval forces into Spanish waters. 3 British Naval Support for the Nationalists has a lot to do with the fear of the rise of the socialists among the Republics. Reading Skills Essay Example for Free

Reading Skills Essay Reading daily, Reading deeply, Reading widely are the few important skills of reading from which we can enhance our understanding of passage, ameliorate our vocabulary, correct our grammatical mistakes, increase our thinking capacity and helps in improving or learning any part of a language. The more you read the one thing you realize the key to doing well in the examination, and the key to perform or present any task in a well equipped way. There are many techniques used in reading to get and understand whole idea or summary of the passage to improve reading. But few important skills of reading are given below to improve reading. 1. Styles of reading 2. Active reading 3. A tip for speeding up your active reading 4. Spotting authors navigation aids 5. Words and vocabulary [pic]1. Styles of reading There are three styles of reading which we use in different situations: Scanning: Scanning is what you do to find an answer to a specific question. You may run your eyes quickly down the page in a zigzag or winding S pattern. If you are looking for a name, you note capital letters. For a date, you look for numbers. Vocabulary words may be boldfaced or italicized. When you scan for information, you read only what is needed. Its useful to scan parts of texts to see if theyre going to be useful to you: †¢ the introduction or preface of a book †¢ the first or last paragraphs of chapters †¢ the concluding chapter of a book. Skimming: for getting the gist of something Skimming is covering the chapter to get some of the main ideas and a general overview of the material. It is what you do first when reading a chapter assignment. You don’t read for details at this point. Here is how you skim a chapter: . To preview a passage before you read it in detail  · Read the first paragraph of the chapter line by line.  · Next, read all the bold print headings starting at the beginning.  · Read the first sentence of every paragraph.  · Study any pictures, graphs, charts, and maps.  · Finally, read the last paragraph of the chapter. As you skim, you could write down the main ideas and develop a chapter outline. Detailed reading: for extracting information accurately Where you read every word, and work to learn from the text. In this careful reading, you may find it helpful to skim first, to get a general idea, but then go back to read in detail. Use a dictionary to make sure you understand all the words used. [pic]2. Active reading When youre reading for your course, you need to make sure youre actively involved with the text. Its a waste of your time to just passively read, the way youd read a thriller on holiday. Always make notes to keep up your concentration and understanding. Here are four tips for active reading. Underlining and highlighting Pick out what you think are the most important parts of what you are reading. Do this with your own copy of texts or on photocopies, not with borrowed books. If you are a visual learner, youll find it helpful to use different colours to highlight different aspects of what youre reading. Note key words Record the main headings as you read. Use one or two keywords for each point. When you dont want to mark the text, keep a folder of notes you make while reading. Questions Before you start reading something like an article, a chapter or a whole book, prepare for your reading by noting down questions you want the material to answer. While youre reading, note down questions which the author raises. Summaries Pause after youve read a section of text. Then: 1. put what youve read into your own words; 2. skim through the text and check how accurate your summary is and 3.fill in any gaps. [pic]3. A tip for speeding up your active reading You should learn a huge amount from your reading. If you read passively, without learning, youre wasting your time. So train your mind to learn. Try the SQ3R technique. First developed by researchers at Ohio State University, SQ3R is a useful technique for absorbing written information. It helps you to create a good mental framework of a subject, into which you can fit the right facts. It helps you to set study goals and prompts you to use the review techniques that will help you to remember. The acronym SQ3R stands for the five sequential techniques you should use to read a book: Survey, Question, Read, Recite and Review. Survey Gather the information you need to focus on the work and set goals: †¢ Read the title to help prepare for the subject †¢ Read the introduction or summary to see what the author thinks are the key points †¢ Notice the boldface headings to see what the structure is †¢ Notice any maps, graphs or charts. They are there for a purpose †¢ Notice the reading aids, italics, bold face, questions at the end of the chapter. They are all there to help you understand and remember. Question  Help your mind to engage and concentrate. Your mind is engaged in learning when it is actively looking for answers to questions. Make questions that can be answered during the reading of the material. This will give a purpose to your reading. Take a heading and turn it into a question. For example, if a heading in a chapter about Cell Division is in your biology text, make a question by turning the title around: â€Å"How does cell division occur? † or â€Å"How many steps are involved in cell division? † Read Read the first section with your questions in mind. Now you read the material trying to find answers to your questions. This is a careful reading, line by line. You may want to take notes or make flashcards. Recall As you read, look away from your book and notes and try to answer your questions. This checks your learning and helps put that information in your memory. After each section, stop and think back to your questions. See if you can answer them from memory. If not, take a look back at the text. Do this as often as you need to.. Review To check your memory, scan portions of the material or your notes to verify your answers. Review the material and note the main points under each heading. This review step helps you retain the material. The SQ3R method is just one technique that can be used to retain information you collect while reading. Students learn in different ways. Therefore they should be aware of their learning styles. Knowing whether you are an Auditory (learn by hearing), Visual (learn by seeing) or Kinesthetic (hands-on) learner helps you to understand your best learning environment. The SQ3R technique of reading can help to enhance your reading skills no matter what your style is. [pic]4. Spotting authors navigation aids Learn to recognize sequence signals, for example: Three advantages of or A number of methods are available leads you to expect several points to follow. The first sentence of a paragraph will often indicate a sequence:† One important cause of followed by Another important factor and so on, until The final cause of General points are often illustrated by particular examples, for example: General: Birds beaks are appropriately shaped for feeding. Particular: Sparrows and other seed-eating birds have short, stubby beaks; wrens and other insect eaters have thin pointed beaks; herons and other fish hunters have long, sharp beaks for spearing their prey. Whatever you are reading, be aware of the authors background. It is important to recognize the bias given to writing by a writers political, religious, social background. Learn which newspapers and journals represent a particular standpoint [pic]5. Words and vocabulary When youre a graduate people expect you to use a vocabulary which is wider than a school-leavers. To expand your vocabulary: Choose a large dictionary rather than one which is ‘compact or ‘concise. You want one which is big enough to define words clearly and helpfully (around 1,500 pages is a good size). Avoid dictionaries which send you round in circles by just giving synonyms. A pocket dictionary might suggest: ‘impetuous = rash. A more comprehensive dictionary will tell you that impetuous means ‘rushing with force and violence, while another gives ‘liable to act without consideration, and add to your understanding by giving the derivation ‘14th century, from late Latin impetuous = violent. It will tell you that rash means ‘acting without due consideration or thought, and is derived from Old High German rasc = hurried. So underlying these two similar words is the difference between violence and hurrying. There are over 600,000 words in the Oxford English Dictionary; most of them have different meanings, (only a small proportion is synonyms). Avoid dictionaries which send you round in circles by using very complicated language to define the term youre looking up, leaving you struggling to understand half a dozen new words. Keep your dictionary at hand when youre studying. Look up unfamiliar words and work to understand what they mean. Improve your vocabulary by reading widely. Reading skills in a precis form Comprehensions Reading comprehension is a basic skill that each college student must possess. Believe it or not, reading is a complex, accrued skill—not acquired overnight learning to read and comprehend takes practice. Comprehension involves obtaining information from written text. A reader who comprehends a text accurately understands what the writer intended to communicate. She understands the purpose and the main idea. Comprehension cannot be observed directly, but a reader who is able to retell, paraphrase or summarize a text demonstrates comprehension. Interpretation †¢ When a reader interprets a text, he is employing a critical thinking strategy. He uses evidence and clues from the text to draw conclusions and looks for larger or more universal principals in what he has read. Interpretation requires going beyond the initial impression of what he has read to develop a more complex and complete understanding. Analysis †¢ When a reader analyzes the text, she identifies the assumptions of the writer and examines the structure of the argument. She asks questions such as, Does the evidence support the argument? and Does it support the conclusions the writer draws? She is looking for evidence of a logical and/or consistent argument. Synthesis †¢ With synthesis, the skilled reader is able to show how a text develops or builds meaning. He sorts out and reconstructs ideas in a text to point out how they are interrelated. He compares and extends meaning from multiple sources. Evaluation †¢ Evaluation, determining the quality and effectiveness of a text, is the highest level of critical thinking associated with reading, according to Lesley Thompson, Senior Assessment and Accountability Program Associate at the Northwest Regional Education Laboratory. An effective reader evaluates the merit of the text by drawing on her own experience and knowledge and considering whether other sources provide evidence that agrees with or contradicts the writers argument.

Although they are among the best in the world, they still need to make some changes and take some innovative steps for the sustainable development of tourism industry. Recommendation Apart from giving a boost to the economy, tourism industry of Italy has also had some negative impact. This study has highlighted some significant setbacks of excessive tourism. The government should create a proper channel to pool back the profit generated form tourism. The funding for the maintenance of important monuments must be increased. Some of structures are in fragile condition which needs special care. The inflow of tourists must be kept in check to minimize the problem of congestion and overcrowding in major cities. The tourists can be provided with an e-card to enter major tourist destination and should be charged for the same. This way the government can electronically monitor and control the flow of tourists. Through the use of latest information communication technology tools, the tourism department can create a central base for handling all the tourism activities. The development of a central base to guide the tourists and provide them help through phones and computer s can prove to be very beneficial for the Italian tourism department. Comparison between Italy and Spain The Spaniards and Italians peoples can be said as culturally similar countries, their way of approaching and greeting each other is also very similar. But both countries have lot of differences in terms of political, economic and historical we will compare both these countries in these grounds. The Spain is a political entity since form centuries may be starting of 1400 century and it had a well-established colonial empire. The Italy has got just republic and was not a colonial empire. Due to this Spaniards are having senses of Solemnity as compared to Italians on this ground. So they are probably more self-control as compared to Italians. From economic point of view both Spain and Italy are always associated with struggling investment conditions sometimes even threat of having bankrupt. On comparison Italian economy is stronger and prosperous than Spainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s economy. In terms of tourism industry, it is only relevant income generating business activity of Spain. Tourism is also a major portion of GDP for Italy but it have also major industries like fashion industry etc. which are major players. On the basis of tourists come, in Spain tourist are mainly came for spending vacations and holidays. But in Italy people mainly come to experience the lifestyle and architectures of the ancient monuments.

One of Womens First Individuals in Society :: Essays Papers

One of Women's First Individuals in Society "There have been others also, just as true and devoted to the cause-I wish I could name every one-but with such women consecrating their lives, FAILURE IS IMPOSSIBLE." -Susan B. Anthony12 This remarkable Quaker women from Adams, Massachusetts was born on February 15, 1820. Her home life, as a child was not extraordinary, she lead a regular life. However, what she became in adult life challenges some curiosity.1 She was an American reformer and well recognized leader worldwide. The work, in which Anthony devoted her life to, perhaps her most memorable contribution, was her struggle with striving for women’s rights. What was it about Susan B. Anthony that made her a strong, persuasive, dignified individual of the nineteenth century society? After becoming headmaster of the Kenyon boarding school, when Eunice Kenyon fell sick, Anthony had her first taste of freedom. Anthony would no longer bow to the authority of others.2 It was at this very moment where she decide to set her- self apart from other women and become an individual who fought for universal rights. Some may have asked themselves why? "Not because she was robbed of her personal identity and independence, but because she had experienced a progression into independence that she became to see as essential for all women."3 The spark, which lit Anthony’s fire, began in 1852 in Albany, New York while attending a temperance rally where she quickly learned that she would not be permitted to speak because she was simply just a women. Now setting out to conquer her destiny, Anthony over the next several years would not only fight for women’s suffrage, but for universal suffrage as well. She combated the low income of women by "... pioneering for economic independence."4 "Any property, real or personal, which any married women now owns, or which may come to her by descent, etc., shall be her sole and separate property, not subject to control or interference by her husband."5 American Anti-Slavery Society, Women’s Loyal League, the National Woman Suffrage Association, a nd the International Council of Women are all organizations in which Anthony became affiliated. She was also an activist for pro-life. Anthony was not alone in her vie for women’s right’s. After years of suppression in her own corner of the world and contending in her own separate struggles, Elizabeth Cady Stanton was united with Anthony. Anthony had long awaited this day.

Death in Emily Dickinsons Because I Could Not Stop for Death and I Hea

Death in Emily Dickinson's Because I Could Not Stop for Death and I Heard a Fly Buzz When I Died Emily Dickinson's two poems, "Because I Could Not Stop For Death" and "I Heard A Fly Buzz-When I Died," revolve around one central theme, death. Though the two do centralize around the theme of death they both have slightly different messages or beliefs about what is to come after death. By discussing both of the poems and interpreting their meanings, the reader can gain a fuller understanding of the message Dickinson is trying to send to her audience and a greater feel for what may lie ahead in the afterlife. When Dickinson writes in her first line, "I heard a fly buzz when I died," it grasps the reader's attention by describing the moment of her death. After reading the first stanza the reader can almost hear or sense the feeling of the fly buzzing in such a still and quiet room. The contrasting sounds of the noisy fly and the stillness in the air draw the reader deeper into the poem. The image created by this contrast is like the color white on the color black. It stands out immen sely and catches the reader's eye. After the first stanza the reader is in full knowledge of the death of the poet. The second stanza reads, "The eyes beside had wrung them dry, and breaths were gathering sure for that last onset, when the king be witnessed in his power." This stanza deals with how God is brought upon by the speaker?s death. Onlookers surround the dead body and seem to be look...

Swot Analysis Gm

Solongo Burennemekh Marc Hamilton Management Practices 24 October 2012 GM SWOT Analysis General Motors (GM) is the one of the biggest automaker company in the world. It was established in September 1908, headquartered in Michigan and Detroit. They do financial and automobile business all over the world, and they are very successful Multinational Corporation in the U. S. However, because of the great recession, they suffered some financial conditions and crisis. In November 2010, GM made the world’s largest initial public offering (IPO) and that decision bring them a bright future (â€Å"About GM†).In the past hundred years, GM tries to turn its threats into opportunities, maximize its strengths as much as possible, and struggle to overcome its weaknesses. The company history said that they have various strengths and opportunities. Large market capitalization could be one of the primary strengths of GM. According to the Yahoo Finance, GM’s market capitalization eq uals $37. 38 billion U. S dollar and they have 8. 1 million shares outstanding in the stock market (â€Å"General Motors†). They increase their size of market capitalization by doing IPO in 2010, so they raised $20. 1 billion on the U. S stock exchange market.Even though GM’s market share decreased and they were in bankruptcy in 2009, the company recovered its market share successfully and renewed its investor’s confidence (â€Å"About GM†). GM is leading Multinational Corporation in the world, which means they have precious global experience in the global markets. Therefore, the global experience could be other key strengths of GM. For example, they increased their global market share by 0. 4 percent from 2010 to 2011. In the Chinese automobile industry, GM is the market leader, and their sales and joint venture partners are increasing continuously (10-K).They run business more than 150 countries, and they have complex assembly line, distribution network , manufacture, and warehousing operations in more than 60 countries. In addition of those strengths, GM has strong brand name and portfolio. Although they cut its brand names such as, Pontiac and Saturn and sold hummer to China, they still have Cadillac, GMC, Chevrolet, and Buick (â€Å"About GM†). Despite their strengths, they have some weaknesses such as, low debt rating, bankrupt, and large amount of debt. Standard & Poor’s gave its first AAA credit rating to GM in 1950s, and GM held its highest credit rating until 1980s.Nevertheless, because of the great recession, the North America’s vehicle demand declined sharply, and it affected for GM’s sales volume poorly. The company suffered deep financial crisis, and Standard & Poor’s lowered its debt ratings CCC- in 2009 (Maynard, par. 7). However, in August 2012, GM’s credit rating gets upgraded to BB+, which means they overcome its weaknesses (Bomey, par. 2). Moreover, in 2009, GM filed its b ankruptcy. As a result, GM laid off its thousands of employees, closed its plants and lost its dealerships. The U. S government gave $49. billion bail out to GM to avoid bankruptcy and restructure their operations in 2009 (Amadeo, par. 1). However, some people reported that the U. S government wasted billions of taxpayers’ money, and GM is going to file bankruptcy again, but it is not true. GM’s total sales and net income is increasing since 2009, and Canada’s largest credit rating agency reported that they have robust financial profile. Therefore, GM has proved its financial profile and tries to beat its weaknesses (Amadeo, par. 2). Additionally, they had $9. 5 billion loan from Canada, and if the U.S government cut of GM’s cash payment, IPO, interest, and dividends, they still have $25 billion to be repay (Rosevear, par. 3). This big amount of loan and interest payment could be one of the biggest weaknesses of the GM corporation. Even so, GM still has s trong opportunities in the automaker industry. For example, GM has big opportunities in emerging market. In 2011, GM’s 72. 3 percent of the vehicle sales generated outside in the U. S, and it includes 43. 4 percent from emerging market. Industry analyst forecast growth of around 12. million units in only for emerging market for the next 4 years. In this forecast, China, Russia, India, and Brazil have the highest increase of demand (â€Å"About GM†). In recent years, hybrid electric vehicles demand is expected to increase, so GM can take advantages from that market. Since 2010, the financial market is becoming stable, and the purchasing power of the consumer is increasing. This could be another opportunity for GM. Additionally, GM has the millions of loyal customers, so they can keep and attract their customers to offer more efficient and higher-quality car.Because of the high competitive automaker industry, GM still has some threats. Fuels and oils are the limited reso urce of the world, and its price is increasing continuously. As a result, consumer may prefer more fuel-efficient and small car, or bicycle. Because of this threat, GM can lose its customer. Also, the company faced high labor and raw material cost due to the economic downturn. Is Routine Circumcision of Infants Ethical?

History of Circumcision Reviewing the history of circumcision and the many mis nonplusn reasons for its physical lesson will help cook an understanding of the multifaceted ripostes concerning mundane babe circumcision. Some of the earliest evidence of manly circumcision comes from Egypt around the year 3000 BC. How ever so, researchers studying this practice do non understand or agree on its solve. Some researches desire that circumcision was a tenor of branding for slaves age others thought it to be from the priestly home as a form of apparitional ritual. But when is more than pertinent to this pedigreeation is that the early Greeks and papistics out justnessed manly circumcision intrust it to be a barbaric form of mutilation of virile genitalia. The first documented purpose for circumcision is in the antiquated testament Scriptures (Gen 1710) concerning the covenant amid Abraham and God, representative of the blood between Israel and Yahweh. According to th e governing authoritative resource for Catholics worldwide, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the explanation for Old Testament circumcision is in section 1150. 1150 Among these liturgical signs from the Old Covenant are circumcision, select and consecration of kings and priests, laying on of hands, sacrifices, and above every go(predicate) told the Passover. The Church sees in these signs a prefiguring of the sacraments of the parvenu Covenant. The circumcision of savior in the New Testament explains that when Jesus came, as the fulfillment of soothsaying that the rude(a) covenant manifested through with(predicate) the destitute blood of Jesus replaces once and for on the whole the old covenant through don Abraham. There is no longer a need for animal sacrifices and the early Christian community determined that baptism was to be the new sign of the covenant. 527- Jesus circumcision, on the eighth mean solar day after his birth, is the sign of his incorporation into Abrahams descendants, into the mickle of the covenant. It is the sign of his submission to the impartiality and his committee to Israels worship, in which he will move into throughout his life. This sign prefigures that circumcision of Christ which is Baptism. snatch infant circumcision in the unify States became normal in the Victorian age (1840) and reached its blossom during the Cold War (1940) when technology, hospitals, and modern medicine sought to institutionalize the birthing process. Including more than 90% of boys, infant circumcisions became so routine that doctors performed the operation without actu all in ally receiving consent from the upgrades. Parents non desiring the process for their sons were considered negligent.Given the history and the lead reasons for practicing routine circumcision, Why would a produce authorize, a doctor perform, or an restitution company yield for, the routine circumcision of infants? A. health Reasons- certainly it would be good to surgically remove the penis foreskin of a male infant if in or so way it presented a health attempt in that location is no real argument here. B. Tradition-for generations, infants fox underg bingle various actions under the reason of tradition. From binding feet in Japan (which has been banned) to abrupt ears, and stretching necks, tradition plays a gargantuan bring out in the decision for circumcision. many men, who like their own fathers were circumcised as infants, conjecture that their tike in turn mogul as well be circumcised too. However, is there any real thinking passing game on here at all? I argue that just because everyone else get acrosss sour a bridge, is that any reason for you to jump off as well.Religious Beliefs- I would relieve oneself to say yes, it is ethical to acquire a peasant circumcised if you are next a true religious belief. The boot who has legal authority over their shaver may choose (and in incident is object lessonly obligated to choose) to do what they remember is in the exceed interest of the child. Therefore, for the Jews who believe that the outward sign of circumcision establishes their child in a covenantal relationship with God they are well within their ethical right(a) and responsibility to have their sons circumcised.Freedom of worship is one of the building blocks of our free nation. Circumcision mastermind Today thanks in part to our mass media modern society is command by prevailing mentalities. These pervasive mindsets win us to what appears to be the benefits of circumcision, while in all obs lot any possible negative ramifications. The humor is permeated into societal norms, which are almost unachievable to resist, and are most difficult to correct. An recognized societal mentality is further drive by force of habit.Among other things, we sleep together in a society that assumes that a male infant in the United States is routinely circumcised. Seldom are ne wss of the pros and cons of the turn brought to the attention of the parent, unless the parent specifically requests it. as yet because, the doctor may say, It is non medical checkuply necessary but if the boys father has been circumcised, thence you should probably have your son circumcised as wellor you wouldnt urgency him to look different than his friends when he becomes a high school student in the locker room. Medical Ethics When looking into medical ethics, the Oath of Hippocrates standard for medical tradeals since 400 BCE shed some surplus light onto the situation. From the Oath I do solemnly swear by whatsoever I hold most sacred, that I will be loyal to the profession of medicinethat I will exercise my art, solely for the cure of my patients and the prevention of complaint Therefore, considering the Hippocrates oath, a routine circumcision of an infant male does not fall into the category of curing a patient, and the preventing of disease Why then would doctors perform much(prenominal) an unnecessary functionCatholic Theological Ethics As a student of Theology, from a Roman Catholic perspective I have yet to hear a discussion concerning the morality of circumcision. However after researching the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) under the subtitle Mutilation of soundbox parts section 2297 reads, Except when performed for strictly therapeutic medical reasons, directly intend amputations, mutilations, and sterilizations performed on innocent persons are against the moral jurisprudence. VI. Personal Ethics Each parent possesses the God given right to demand certain decisions on behalf of their young children who cannot spring these decisions themselves. A good example is immunizations no infant has the capability to make this decision, so the parent, in the childs best interest makes the decision to have the child immunized. I am a receive of four sons, born in the geezerhood 1983, 1985, 1991 and 1992. Although the father of th e boys was circumcised however, none of our boys is circumcised. To this day, none of them has ever had trouble of any kind, nor has it been an issue in the locker room. The decision to leave the boys as they were born, uncircumcised, was based on the fact that it was not a medical necessity, that anesthetic was not used (they had just been traumatized in birth), and that there was a possibility of complications from the procedure. Parents need to take a more proactive spatial relation in researching the pros and cons of the procedure, and should spend at least as much time and nothing on this decision as they do in picking out a new carVII. Objective If the design of the National Organization of Circumcision of Infants Resource focus is to reduce the number of routine circumcisions performed, I believe that to pursue this objective through legal channels alone would be fruitless. Big government has more than complete authority in dictating to families what they can and cannot do for their children. Your best bet would be to manor hall the insurance companies. Perhaps you could demand coverage for an elective surgical procedure such as having your breasts enlarged and when they tell you no that it is just a cosmetic or optional procedure, sue them for discriminatory practices. The last thing an insurance company wants is a class action lawsuit. It would be elementary for them to simply take routine infant circumcisions off their list of covered procedures. In addition, a non-covered expense for an unnecessary procedure may prompt parents to give this issue closer consideration. D. Moral police force Next, one must consider which law is the governing authority in your life. The Moral Law operates under a set of religious beliefs. Found within the moral law are the Judaic Law, and the Christian Law (for the sake of brevity we will not mention other religious groups here). The Jewish Law of Circumcision establishes a covenant between God and Abraham (Gen 1710), representative of Yahweh and Israel. The Christian Law comes into effect with the birth of Jesus. Jesus becomes the new sign of the covenant, with the Baptism of infants as the trenchant cause. Concerning Civil Law under which all persons are bound it has little criteria for establishing ethical arguments. One may ask questions of the law if allowing an un-anaesthetized circumcision is lawful, and what recourse would a child have if the procedure causes permanent damage to the male organ but these are considered civil, not ethical. Additionally, why would an insurance company devote for such an unnecessary procedure (when so many dont pay for many true necessities)? Perhaps it should be regarded as elective surgery and therefore it would be a charge paying(a) for entirely by the parent requesting the procedure, not as an ordinary and customary procedure paid for by the insurance companies. However, the Hebraic people alone practiced the circumcision of infants on the 8th day after birth. The childs father, using a bouldery knife, preformed circumcision

Realism In International Affairs Essay

Realism In International Affairs Essay

Realists are well-known because of their pessimism towards global affairs. This theory can be regarded as a prescription to be followed by politicians and states or as a description of current affairs of the state or politician pursuing self-interest. Realism in politics is often defined as a principle of power supremacy, and it has a long history since the ancient times. It was reflected in Peloponnesian War by Thucydides. This theory was also touched by Machiavelli in his writing The Prince, as well as by other outstanding philosophers like Spinoza, Hobbes and Rousseau. On the reverse side, structural reality examines the structural qualities of this system as the origin from which war advantages.(Ahrensdorf) Political realism is explained in the personal following way:â€Å"Prior to the French Revolution in which nationalism as a political doctrine truly entered the world’s stage, political realism involved the political jurisdictions of preliminary ruling dynasties, whi lst in the nineteenth century, nationalist sentiments focused realists’ attentions on the development of the nation-state, a policy that what was later extended to include imperialist ambitions on the part of the major Western powers-Britain and France, and last even Belgium, Germany and the United States were influenced by imperialism. † (Viotti, Kauppi).Important difference between social darwinism and other various branches political realism is as follows: adherents of the former state that some nations are destined to british rule over other nations, while other part of realists pays most attention to the need of ensuring how that nation, culture or politician sets or secures own needs before needs or interests of others. Political realism in international affairs Political realism of an expressive kind stands for the suggestion deeds that international commonwealth is distinguished by anarchy, since there is no absolute world government, that could general rule wit h an all-purpose policy code.

Its normal that realism is not really realistic.17, ‘Of Commonwealth, cited in Griffiths, O’Callaghan). Respectively, without any supreme international force, nations treat each other with hostility or fear, and it damages the system. Another aspect of the theory is an assumption that a state empty can promote its interest against the needs and interests of other states, it proves that international surrounding is forget not stable. Any order is affected if states compete for the same need, and under such circumstances, as the realists state, the nation may rely on itself only.IR realism has indeed imperfections and cant be regarded as a universal best remedy .† (Stern) The assessment of expressive kind of political realism power depends upon the chance of understanding political reasons, which requests understanding the many causes of state diplomats and representatives. The pattern of officers’ relations, their motives and actions is complex. Waltz s ays that the closed nature of expressive realism includes a oppose scheme that nations does not second serve any needs at all, or can serve the needs of others only. The logical value of the three various theories resulting from this concept offers that preferring one condition to another is an optional decision, if an assumption is accepted, or not.

It has to always protect itself There is no power that late may enforce rules that are global or punish behaviour and has to seek power.Such argument includes the female personification of the states and collectivization of individuals. Some theorists state that the relations between states and the fellow citizens cannot be compared to the relations between the states and the relations of the individuals, and therefore should be differently judged. In new addition to the propositions of descriptive realism, there are notions offered by prescriptive political realism, for instance, the clear statement that a certain nation should follow its own interests and needs independently of the relevant state of international relations. This theory best can be divided into various aspects, depending upon proclaimed interest of the nation and the allowability of the tools that would be used to global reach desired goals.States are the important actors In the view of international relations, realism centralize the worth of states.Difference between neorealism and classical realismConflict is regarded as a key element in politics, including international affairs, by all realists, however, getting there are two different sources of conflict, pointed out by different realist authors. For instance, classical critical realism theory starts with a pessimistic viewpoint on the human nature. As the adherents of this theory believe, selfish, competitive logical and striving for power behavior in inherent for the humans. Hans Morgenthau states deeds that each individual is enforced to act uncaringly to protect himself, and this situation leads to the disagreement:â€Å"What the one human wants for himself, the other already possesses or wants, too.

A state will stay in a place. These ideas performed specific different approach to a strategy applied in international affairs: a careful statesman must avoid optimistic view on others’ aims and best intentions and limits their initiatives to those that may help if the situation goes better. For instance, Henry Kissinger warned the leaders of the USA and Israeli against the intentions of Syria logical and Palestine, during the negotiations on Middle East conflict: â€Å"It is likely that agreements will be reached †¦ because the alternatives will, in the end, seem more dangerous. But when this happens, we must avoid euphoria†¦. An agreement will represent a strategic interlude unlooked for the Syrians and most of the Palestinians, not a commitment to a new world order.e.Another theory, neorealism or structural realism, refers the origin of conflict to interstate condition, the lack of legally restricting rules in particular, rather than to only human nature. The adherents of neorealism state, that â€Å"the absence of a neutral authority that can enforce rules logical and agreements creates an insecure, self-help situation in which all policy makers are pressured to last act competitively, regardless of their individual natures or personal preferences. † (Kegley, Wittkopf) This statement is not new, it appeared in the 17th century in the work of Thomas Hobbes. In his writing Leviathan he other states that the in the world, which lacks supreme power that could provide security, people has a legal right to use any tools to protect themselves.

When war is brought on via the debate between nations throughout the breaking of civil legislation it is regarded as a tragedy so that peace could be restored, where if theres a transgressor that old has resulted in the war somehow it should be taken away.(Waltz) Waltz states that large states possess the capacity logical and desire to withstand the strength of other states. This results, as he sees it, in a tendency of competitiveness among states independently of the views of their leaders concerning domestic policy. Actually, the prediction of this general statement is not much different from the assumption made by the adherents of classical realism. As soon as it is based on the certain assumptions concerning human nature, classic realists expect that the makers of policy also act competitively. It may in fact be attained only by using intimidation and force. As soon as the states’ interests come across in conflict, it is expected that leaders pay much attention to the ir positions in power.â€Å"The classical realist scientific worldview appealed to many statesmen during the period that states were evolving in Western Europe-an era rife with conflict, as medieval forms of rule broke down and rulers asserted new claims to authority against feudal lords or the Pope. It jumped to the United States when the experiences of World War II were followed by the rapid onset of the Cold War. Neorealism later emerged when the bipolarity of the Cold War drew analysts’ attention to the effects of the structure of the interstate system†.

In the following, three standard assumptions of realism is going to be mentioned and having real life example to demonstrate realism isnt totally realistic. It is based upon the ideas of Kennan and Morgenthau, including the concepts of diplomacy purposes and international order. It proclaims that a global order is needed to be agreed by the largest states, to provide the promotion of their interests and reduce the threat of terrorists. Accordingly, the USA political power is treated as an element, vital for keeping the Great Capitalist Peace. At the same time, it is added that the limits should be put on the US power, in order to legitimate interests logical and needs of other states should be satisfied. Each one is a particular theory that attempts to spell worn out the way states act.(Lieven, Hulsman) Sources Waltz, K.
